10/27/05 - MANAGUA, Nicaragua
- Tropical Storm Beta extended this
years record for named storms
during an Atlantic hurricane season,
forming Thursday off the coast of
Nicaragua and threatening Colombian
islands. Last week Tropical Storm
Alpha formed, which was the first
time a letter from the Greek alphabet
has been used because the list of
storm names was exhausted. The
previous record of 21 storms stood
since 1933.

ISLAMABAD,
Pakistan - A magnitude 7.6
earthquake rocks three countries in
South and Central Asia. Thousands are
dead in India, Pakistan and
Afghanistan.The powerful
7.6-magnitude earthquake near the
Pakistan-India border Saturday
reduced villages to rubble, triggered
landslides and flattened an apartment
building. More than 3,000 people were
killed in both nations, and a
Pakistan army spokesman called the
devastation "a national
tragedy."
Hurricane
Rita is
expected to hit Galveston in between
Friday evening and Saturday morning.
(Sept. 23rd or 24) An estimated 1.8
million people are being told to
evacuate Gulf Coast communities as
Hurricane Rita threatens a large
swathe of Texas and Louisiana. Many
Texan evacuees were caught in traffic
jams and the state opened southbound
carriageways to northbournd traffic.
Rita remains extremely dangerous
despite being downgraded to a
Category 4 storm. It is forecast to
make landfall Saturday between
Galveston, Texas, and the
Texas-Louisiana border. [view image]
This is the 3rd strongest storm in
terms of pressure in the Atlantic
basin since weather records have even
been documented!

1556 - China - The
Deadliest Earthquake ever recorded to
date
The world's most
destructive earthquake took place
during 1556 in central China. It hit
such a part of the state where
majority of inhabitants populated in
caves engraved from soft rock. These
domiciles were badly damaged in the
earthquake, taking lives of more than
830,000 natives. This earthquake was
followed by another lethal earthquake
which happened in 1976. The epicenter
of this earthquake was Tangshan,
China, which took lives of more than
250,000 natives.
